Normally the Audition Bulletin Board promotes itself most effectively – the top 10 Google Search Terms that lead to my site are all some variation on “orange county theatre auditions”. There is a major update today that marks the first appearance of two local companies on the board, and I wish them well in putting talented people into their shows. I do, though, want to indulge in a moment’s personal encouragement.

This Monday is the auditions for the OC-Centric New Play Festival. They will be held in Moulton Hall, Room 212, on the campus of Chapman University, from 6:30-10pm. Callbacks will be Saturday and Sunday, the 26th and 27th. Appointments can be made by calling (714) 628-7219.

Why am I singling out this show for a little extra promotion? Well, because the Festival is only in its third year, still establishing itself, and is a summer event rather than a year-round company, it may have a harder time sticking in peoples’ minds. But also, from pure self-interest, because I have a script in the festival: my one-act play The Rothko, which will be directed by Richard Stein, a brilliant fellow who was managing director of the Laguna Playhouse for over a decade.

There is a small stipend available for actors, as well as the potential for being cast in multiple scripts. This is the world premiere for my work, so, naturally, I want the best we can get.

I am happy and somewhat shocked that this will not be the only time local actors will be performing my work on-stage this year – this weekend I will be one of the contributing playwrights for Long Beach Playhouse’s 24-Hour Theatre, and for the summer I will be writing another pre-show skit for On the Edge Theatre’s outdoor Shakespeare production in Laguna Hills – The Taming of the Shrew, this time around. It makes me proud to be building my profile as a local playwright. More pertinently, though, it makes me urgently want to get that date out there.

Monday night. Chapman campus. I hope to see some talented faces.

Shameless nepotism or something like it
